Taxes Due on Dormant Store Space

November 5, 2008

One year after Apple spent $13.3 million for a retail building along Wisconsin Avenue in Washington (DC), the space lies dormant and city records show the company hasn’t paid over $140,000 in assessed property taxes. Apple purchased the former French Connection space in September 2007 for the District’s first company store, and the former retailer moved out earlier this year. But there have been no building permit applications or other activity since then. In the meantime, the city’s property tax records show that the assessed $70,162.17 semi-annual property tax payments have not been paid for 2008. The records also show that the District has assessed $22,451.87 in interest and penalties to the property’s account. If the store opens, it would be the first Apple store within the District, although the region has several stores in surrounding Maryland and Virginia.

The District of Columbia Web site lists the property taxes that are due on the retail space that Apple purchased in 2007.
