New Tampa Metro Store Planned

August 6, 2007

The Tampa (Fla.) region is among the state’s fastest growing, pushing north along Interstate 75 to the small town of Wesley Chapel. (pop. 5,887). That’s why developer Forest City Enterprises picked the town to build a huge 5,000-acre community that will include the Shops at Wiregrass shopping center, and why it has penciled in Apple as a tenant. The Tampa Bay Tribune says the city just approved rezoning the mall site to include homes, offices, a hospital and the Main Street-style shopping complex. The St. Petersburg Times says plans filed with Pasco County show Apple will occupy a mall space. Construction could start later this month, and the mall could open by August 2008. It would be the 15th store in the state, and the second in the Tampa area.

Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, in Pinellas County seems like it would have better demographics for the next Tampa Bay area Apple Store. I am beginning to fault Apple for locating it’s suburban stores in uninteresting new mall and “lifestyle” centers instead of taking a lead and helping to reinforce existing urban shopping areas.
