Melbourne Store Design Revealed

February 9, 2007

An Australia real estate developer has proposed building a multi-building project in the Melbourne suburb of Stonnington that includes a 4-story, corner-located Apple store. The project’s architect, Bruce Henderson Architects, has posted renderings of the project on his Web site, showing an all-glass ground floor for the store, two stories hidden behind stainless steel, an a fourth floor surrounded by tinted glass. Behind the store are a 27-story dramatically-shaped apartment building, and an 14-story boutique hotel tower. Read more about the project and see the renderings here. Update: The renderings are speculative and no store is actually finalized. Read the update.

It’s in the innercity suburb of South Yarra, in the city of Stonnington (that’s the local council) in Melbourne.

Isn’t this just a developer’s idea and not Apple’s? Seems he is just looking to generate publicity for his development. As far as I can tell, major flagship stores are located in city centres and not (inner) suburbs. [ifo-I believe you're correct about the design being "proposed." However, I'm sure the developer had some measure of cooperation from Apple in using their architectural plans for the proposal.]

It’s Toorak Road, not Street.

We’d love to get an Apple Store in Melbourne, but they’re talking about tearing down a very well-known historic building, so it’s going to be controversial — and some of that might rub off on Apple.

See also Google Maps.

The rumour is that the store will be based at the old Fun Factory site on the corner of Toorak Rd and Chapel Street, South Yarra. It would be a splendid location!
